£11.44 per hour (this will rise to £12.21 in March in line with National Living Wage and applies to all, including those under the age of 21)
Are you looking for a fun and varied job in hospitality? YHA York are looking for an Activity Team Member to join their team!
As an Activity Team Member, you’ll play a key role in making our guests’ experiences memorable. Your efforts will be at the core of our mission to provide exceptional hospitality and amazing activities and educational experiences for hundreds of young people. This is a 0hr contract, with a maximum of 42.5hrs depending upon the need of our activities groups. The role starts at the end of January and finishes at the end of July, with opportunities for extension available.
Situated on the leafy bank of the River Ouse, YHA York is a stone’s throw away from York’s quirky and historic city centre to one side and the gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside on the other. York is the perfect place for history, art and nature lovers alike.

What will you be doing as an Activity Team Member?
Our activity team members cover a wide range of customer-facing duties throughout the hostel, delivering an excellent service to all guests and visitors.
We are a friendly team and will provide the training required for you to undertake the role. However, there is plenty for you to get stuck into from day one, including:
- Ensuring safety and adherence to YHA standards and regulations, all while delivering engaging and enjoyable experiences.
- Tailoring activities to meet the unique needs of our guests, actively seeking feedback to enhance service and retention.
- Collaborating with group leaders to facilitate their roles and provide outstanding activity experiences.
- Maintaining and ensuring the functionality of equipment, promptly reporting any issues to the hostel’s management team.
What Skills and Experience do you need to be an Activity Team Member?
The role concentrates mostly on the activities at the hostel, but there may be the requirement to assist in other hostel departments. Our Activity Team Members undertake a wide range of customer facing duties within the hostel, delivering an excellent service to all guests and visitors.
To provide this service we are looking for the following qualities in our Activity Team Members:
- A passion for outdoor activities and energy for the outdoors
- Experience of working face to face with customers
- Experience of working in a team – can help others to achieve a common goal
- Experience in working with young people, whether through volunteering or paid roles (desirable)
- Excellent timekeeping, with flexibility to cover different shifts – punctual, can work to deadlines
- Ability to manage varying pressures, include peaks in workload demands – can prioritise, able to deal with conflicting duties
- Basic IT skills (ideally Microsoft Office) – able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel
- Knowledge and understanding of the core purpose of YHA – what YHA does and how we do it
