You’re qualified (QTS required) and have real experience with PMLD, complex needs, or a similar setting You’re confident in creating a calm, safe classroom and leading a strong team of support staff You understand alternative communication methods — PECS, eye gaze, switches — or you’re ready to learn You’re comfortable supporting with personal care and medical needs (with training provided) You’re not an ECT — this role calls for someone with hands-on experience in specialist settings Key Responsibilities of a PMLD Teacher Planning and Delivering Personalized Learning Develop highly individualized lesson plans that cater to each student’s unique needs and abilities. Use multisensory approaches (e.g., visual aids, tactile materials, music, and movement) to engage learners. Supporting Communication and Interaction Use alternative communication methods such as Makaton, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices. Foster positive relationships and social interactions between students. Caring for Complex Physical and Medical Needs Collaborate with medical professionals (nurses, physiotherapists) to support students’ health needs (e.g., feeding, positioning, medication). Assist with personal care tasks, ensuring dignity and comfort. Creating an Inclusive and Safe Environment Adapt the classroom setting to be accessible and stimulating. Ensure a safe space where students can explore and learn. Collaboration with Families and Specialists Work closely with parents and caregivers to understand each child’s needs and celebrate progress. Collaborate with other specialists (speech therapists, occupational therapists) to support holistic development. What’s in it for you?
