Assistant Ranger

Hours: 37.5 hours a week (full time)

In this role you are expected to work weekends and some bank holidays. There will be some early starts in June as we carry out our annual cliff counts.

Salary: £11.64 an hour

Interview date: Week commencing the 3rd of February 2025 in Newcastle.

Start date: 3rd March 2025

Duration: Fixed Term Contract for between 30 weeks and 45 weeks, various contracts available

What it’s like to work here

This role is based on the Farne Islands and occasionally the Northumberland Coast. The wider Ranger team includes 3 Rangers and you will report to the Rangers/Area Ranger.

You’ll need to get to and from Seahouses harbour in order to catch boats out to the islands and must be able to get to the National Trust office in Low Newton by-the-sea for induction and other work days.

Island accommodation consists of shared dormitories, shared kitchen and living space. There is no running water and no showers on the island, water is brought on from the mainland in containers. If staying out on the islands, this will be on Inner Farne and Brownsman Island. Please see attached document with further information.

Travel between the Islands and the mainland is by boat (when sea conditions allow). The National Trust own rib crafts which are used by trained staff and there are multiple larger tourist boats which can ferry rangers from the island to the mainland. Rangers will be required to attend a range of enhanced boat skills courses where necessary including boat maintenance, navigation and safety courses.

What you’ll be doing

The Islands are a diverse, beautiful and unique place to work, where no two days are the same. Your time will be spent monitoring the wildlife, managing the habitat and welcoming visitors to the islands. Working and living alongside your team, you will build close relationships with your colleagues and contribute to a strong team effort. You will have a variety of duties which will include habitat management, boat-based cliff counts, puffin census, gull management, visitor engagement, island maintenance and landing boats onto the island.

You will promote the work that we do and connect people to our cause, sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm to emphasise the importance of protecting the Farne Islands for the future. Your inspiration and dedication should encourage support and enhance people’s understanding of the significance of the Farne Islands and its wildlife.
