We are currently seeking a SEMH Teaching Assistant to join one of our partner schools near Scarborough, dedicated to supporting students with SEMH, Autism, and ADHD. This school serves pupils aged 6 to 16 and is committed to creating an inclusive and nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
Your Role: As a SEMH Teaching Assistant at GSL, you will be working closely with students who need tailored support to overcome their challenges. You will help create a safe, positive, and structured environment that enables students to develop both academically and personally. You’ll play a key part in helping them build confidence, independence, and resilience.
Key Responsibilities:
Support children with SEMH needs, both one-on-one and in small groups
Work alongside teachers to implement individual education plans (IEPs) and Education Healthcare Plans (EHCP’s)
Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment
Use de-escalation techniques and other strategies to manage challenging behaviors
Provide emotional and social support, helping pupils navigate their challenges and build life skills
The Ideal Candidate:
Has previous experience working with children with SEMH needs or within SEND settings
Holds a Team Teach level 2 certification (or is willing to obtain it through GSL)
Is patient, resilient, and calm under pressure
Has a genuine passion for helping vulnerable young people and empowering them to succeed
Is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of children and young adults
SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements:
Must hold the Right to Work in the UK.
Experience working with students with SEMH needs in a school or similar setting for at least 6 months. Placements through University or volunteering experiences will be accepted.
Understanding of SEMH-related challenges and appropriate strategies for intervention and support.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
Be able to work collaboratively with staff members and outside agencies, such as counsellors and mental health professionals.
An Enhanced DBS registered to the update service or be willing to apply for a new one with GSL Education.
